Make your meals Insta-worthy with these top tips.

There’s nothing more appealing than scrolling through Instagram than to stop and gaze at a mouth-wateringly delicious bit of food photography. It can make us want to tuck into a treat, entice us to buy a product or may just inspire us on our latest Friday night dinner plans. Whatever enjoyment you get out of it, you can get in on the action too. Here’s our top tips on how to make your food too irresistible to just swipe past!

Slice of cake

Get a piece of that!

Bakes are a perfect way to get going on your instagram journey. Whether you enjoy making one, or want to show off someone else’s creation - there are some delicious ways to make your cake the top tier!

Focus - it’s always a great idea to add depth of field to your masterpiece. Many smart phones come with such features as portrait mode that will blur anything that is away from the main focus. Why not cut a slice of cake and have the rest of the cake in the background? Team up with some lovely fresh fruit, sprinkles or some napkins and ‘hey presto!’ you’ve got yourself an insta-worthy shot!

It’s all about the angle.

Don’t tuck in just yet! Whether you’ve made yourself a dinner or are out in a restaurant take that shot before your beautifully presented meal is disturbed. Angle dishes with drinks and cutlery to add dynamism and interest.

Complement your dish by changing the angle of your camera, maybe you want to focus in on a lovely bit of salmon? Or maybe the bowl’s a perfect circle so will look good from above? The best thing to do is experiment. After all - our cameras seem to have limitless space these days!

Take it beyond the kitchen.

Take your focus away from the table and explore the wonders of food on your doorstep. If you’re wondering what we could mean. Why not head to your favourite coffee shop or ice cream parlour. The delights of counter displays are there to entice you in. The colours, textures and smells are a huge enjoyment. So share it!

Tag the shops, tag your friends, this is the start of an exciting journey for you to get a following if you choose to want one!

Colour control.

Colour co-ordination for many people is such a joy to view. There’s nothing quite like using nature’s ingredients to create beautiful bright shots. Fruit and vegetables are one of the easiest ways to show off colour in your shot. Try making an all-famous smoothie bowl, or what about a warming soup and fresh bread in the winter?

Another thing you would have noticed throughout these photos is hands. Not only do they add a bit of movement, they add a touch of personalisation. That there is someone behind the scenes. You’ll be surprised how different your shot feels if you just add something as simple as someone holding a bowl!

So there you have it! It really doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. Just think about what you want to achieve from your photographs. Whether it’s sharing some pics with your friends and family or starting up a new foodie page, enjoy it, have fun and begin to reap the rewards of taking some really compelling foodie shots!
