WARNING:
Please be aware that moving a fridge freezer does carry a risk of injury if not handled correctly. To prevent this from happening, we advise:

  • Use floor protection when moving the appliance, and do not move it in a zigzag fashion.
  • Use a sack truck for safe transportation.

What to consider before the move

Ensure that your appliance will fit in the new area by measuring its height, width and depth. Consider leaving some space for ventilation and that there is a plug socket nearby.

Clean and defrost the appliance

Start by preparing your fridge freezer for the move – this includes removing any items that have been left inside. You can use ice packs and a cooling bag to store any food items while your fridge freezer is transported.

This is also a good time to thoroughly clean the interior and exterior of your appliance as no items will be found inside, while you’ll be able to easily access the side and back of your fridge freezer. For more information on cleaning your fridge freezer, click here.

Disconnect your appliance

Switch off the appliance and disconnect it from the mains. If unsure, you can also check the appliance's user manual for model-specific information. We recommend removing the fridge drawers for extra safety. If these cannot be removed, it is best to tape them so there is no movement inside.

Moving the fridge freezer

Ensure you have securely strapped the appliance

Fridge standing upright

Before beginning the move, check that there is nothing obstructing your way, and that the area where you will place your appliance is clean. Remember, the fridge freezer is a heavy appliance, so if you feel unsure about the move, you can always contact a professional mover for help.

Shut the door of the appliance and secure it using a tight rope. You may also choose to wrap the appliance in a protective layer to ensure it doesn’t suffer any damage while moving. You can use a blanket, towel, or any other item that may absorb the shock. Ensure that you have secured the appliance to the appliance trolley with heavy-duty ropes.

If possible, keep the fridge freezer in an upright position. If you need to lay the appliance on its side, ensure that once you have safely completed the move, the appliance is kept still for a minimum of 3 hours in an upright position before switching it on. What to do after the move

Once you have safely moved your appliance:

  • Install in a location out of direct sunlight and as far away as possible from heating elements. Maintain a 30mm clearance to electric or gas hobs. Maintain a 300mm clearance to oil or solid-fuel cookers
  • Ensure that you have left a small gap between the side wall and the appliance for ventilation.
  • If you are leaving the appliance switched off for a long period of time, ensure that you leave the door open to prevent formation of mould.
