How to clean your washing machine

A smelly washing machine drum is a very warm, damp and dark place, which provides the optimum conditions for bad odours to develop and linger over time. These bad odours can even be transferred onto your clothing, which significantly reduces their freshness and defeats the object of putting them in the washing machine in the first place! Below we explain how to clean your washing machine to keep bad smells at bay and ensure your clothes maintain their freshness and brightness.

In order to ensure that your washing machine and your clothes are kept fresh, clean and odour-free, we highly recommend that you put your washing machine through a regular 90°C to 95°C maintenance wash at least once a month without any clothes in the machine. For the best results we also recommend that you use our tested and approved washing machine cleaner in conjunction with your high temperature maintenance wash for safe and effective cleaning and odour removal.

In addition to performing a maintenance wash, we also advise that you clean the washing machine's rubber door seal on a regular basis, as this can harbour bad odours caused by a build up of laundry soils, detergent residues and hard water minerals which could be transferred over to your clothes during a wash cycle. To ensure that this doesn't happen, simply wipe the inside and outside of the door seal with a clean and damp cloth before performing a maintenance wash. It is also important to clean both the washing machine filter and the detergent drawer. A clean filter is required to prevent common washing machine problems such as excess vibrating, loud noises, soaking wet clothes and interruptions to the washing program, and maintaining a clean detergent drawer will allow the washing machine to effectively dispense detergent and fabric softener into the drum.
